ABOUT ME

Hi, I’m Upama Bhattacharya, a Sociologist, mixed-methods researcher, and PhD candidate in Sociology at the University of Texas at Austin. My work examines levels of immigrant incorporation in the United States through indicators of time (paid and unpaid domestic labor) and place (residential choice) among select immigrant-origin groups and legal statuses. I use both large-scale quantitative data (CPS, ATUS) and in-depth qualitative interviews to understand how policies, institutions and cultural ideologies shape everyday immigrant life.

I am currently seeking postdoctoral positions in Sociology, especially in race, ethnicity, migration, economic Sociology and digital technologies, as well as full time roles as a UX Researcher. As a Sociologist, I’m equipped with mixed-methods expertise, combining advanced quantitative analysis with in-depth qualitative research, to investigate how policies, institutions, ideologies and social hierarchies shape people’s lived experiences. As a UX researcher, I bring together my training in social science, user research, and human-centered design to inform more equitable and delightful products and experiences. I’m open to relocation nationally and internationally.

I regularly share my thoughts on UX—both on my blog and on Medium. Beyond research, I paint landscapes and capture moments through photography.
